Who’s nabbed my boots?!

So this weekend me and a few mates went camping in Wombat State Forest. I love getting away. The city is great but can also be a pain in the arse, the hustle and bustle, thankfully it doesn’t take long to get away from it all.

Good pal Ravi has a sweet as Land Cruiser kitted to the 9’s with home made storage, etc. Once in the forest we found an old off road track so followed it in his faithful beast, bouncing around until we could go no further. No-one was near us the entire weekend, you could hear the odd scrambler kicking about but see nothing.

The weekend consisted of good chat, good food, good beer (some of my home brew was put to the test, and passed), good weather, good tunes, good everything! I got to test out all the kit I’d bought and it was a winner. I went axe happy on the Saturday night and I’m feeling it now, my hands especially. Bloody good fun though!

Anyway here are a few vid’s and snaps of the adventures – there are more but I didn’t take them…

Woop…. woop, woop, woop…. woop..

In less than two weeks my good ol’ mucker Garcia (Phil when he is at church) will be making the big trip over from Scotland to sunny Melbourne, doing the same working holiday that I’m currently enjoying. He’s not coming directly here though, no no, he’s popping past Seoul, Korea to bust some Gangnam style moves in the countries capital, in fact he is all ready there. That’ll be a blast and as the days go past I’m getting more and more excited to see his ugly mug again. 🙂

So not only that two days after he arrives here we will be buggering off to Sydney for a long weekend to see my other mate Si whose been secondment to that side of Oz for a few months thanks to work. It’ll be great to see him and the city at the same time. We’ve got a few things organised like a medieval faire and some Oktoberfest beers/meat. Most importantly though Scotland will be making one of the biggest decisions in it’s life time and I’m not going to miss a bit of that. Kilt will be coming with me and we’ll be hammering a bottle or two of whisky over the event. Come on folks make the right decision…

Anyway I’m supposed to be going camping at the Otways today (my bivy, sleeping bag and mat arrived), weather is brilliant (19C today it says) and I’m slowly recovering from a few drinks last night (this included a 100 cats art exhibition). I’ve got work on next week and start of next month (October) I’ll be heading off to do farm work, whether that’s up in Beechworth or not. I’ve just been told camping is off (again!) but everyone is going to Edinburgh gardens (great name eh?) for drinks in the sun. I’m game. 🙂

I’m not dead…

… I just couldn’t be arsed posting any more! It takes at least an hour to write in my journal then get it up here on the t’internetz. So posting from now on will be very sporadic.

Latest update is really about last weekend as I was up in Beechworth for my mate Jezza’s Dad’s 70th birthday shindig. Oh what a great weekend that was! Essentially it was filled with beer, BBQ (this was a full slap up including the biggest Barramundi I’ve seen, and helped prepare, along with meat and everything else), tunes, bonfire, mega awesome proper (and legal) fireworks (talking a trailer used to set these boys off!), sleeping outdoors, successfully learning various ways to open beer bottles, visiting the local brewery twice, night time Frisbee Tron style, dancing…. gah loads of awesome stuff. I didn’t want to leave really, well it looks like for my farm work activities I’ll be going up there soon enough. 🙂

Anyway here is a video of me waking up on the Saturday morning ready for party times, good few photos on the Facebook’s.

In other news I’ve been working doing the usual IT stoof, drinking beer and watching Breaking Bad.

Getting free stuff because I’m foreign

So on Monday the World Cup came to an end on a fairly boring game that’d I’d got before 5am to watch. Well at least those early rises are over. Later I popped past a recruitment agency for an introductory interview, nothing special.

Tuesday I started labouring again but on a different site & with a different crew, another Dan actually who is a sound bloke. This site is a double town house and we were mainly outside moving and installing weather boards. It was a good change from the big & busy commercial site.

Labouring site #2

Labouring site #2

Wednesday I had a phone interview for a 3 week IT contract with a big consultancy firm. Turns out the head of IT was from Glasgow! Had a good chat with him and felt safe in the knowledge that this job was in the bag. I took Ronnie for a celebratory walk.

Pushin' yer luck Ronnie pal

Pushin’ yer luck Ronnie pal

Did more labouring on Thursday and got a phone call from the recruitment agency telling me I hadn’t got the job. Weegie bastard! Clearly you can’t trust the Scots. (Something to do with me travelling so I might not stick at it, what a 3WEEK JOB?!) Thankfully she had another job lined up for me (a 4 week one) which I would start on Monday without the need for an interview. Boost.

Baked a ginger cake Friday morning then got a text from Jezza saying he’d bought a slab of beer and I should come down if I’m thirsty. Being skint this sounded more than amazing so I packed some home brew & cake then bailed. Fayez was there along with flatmate Tom, Sam turned up later. We went on to the roof to watch fireworks but they’d been cancelled due to the plane crash. The views of the city up here is amazing. Rose and some others turned up later when the kitchen got transformed into a dance floor with laser lights and smoke machine. Whisky was then brought out…

…I woke up on a mattress taking about 10 seconds to figure out where the hell I was. Today would not be a good day… Gate crashed Rose’s house where I was fed lots of coffee, Berroca, vegemite toast and even a donut. I was buzzing so much I had to leave. The walk home was rough and the rest of the day about the same. Chinese style pig, cake and a few cups of tea helped a bit. Also had a good chat with my Dad and Carol on the Skype’s. That night’s Australian film entertainment was ‘Bad Boy Bubby‘ and ‘The Snowtown Murders‘, both disturbing in their own ways.

I was up quite early on Sunday as I was heading down to my mate Luke’s house to brew a strong hoppy lager (my kind of lager). Turned out to be a great day for brewing outside. I met Nirva his Border Collie Corgi cross, never seen one of these before. Cute little bugger she was. A few hours later with the beer brewed and my insides full of home brew beer I left for a tram to Etihad stadium. Today the Bombers would be taking on the Bulldogs which we’d be seeing for free. 🙂 Some sort of multicultural event was going on this weekend and the AFL were giving away 20,000 tickets for non-residents, so I scooped 4. Nat, Rose and Jezza came with me and we watched the Bombers leave victorious in the final quarter, great game. A cheeky pint or two afterwards then it was home time.

[This weekend a cold has been brewing in my body. Bugger…]

Dexter fo’ life ya’ll!

So this week I have mostly been looking for work, getting up early to watch the World Cup, walking wee Ronnie, watching Breaking Bad (believe the hype) and getting a tattoo. 🙂

Omelette du Fromage

Omelette du Fromage

Yup, on Tuesday I went and met Mark (a friend of a friend) at Midnight Ink (pre-planned of course) and got some ink stuck in my arm. I’ve been wanting this for a while now so it was about time I got it done. You only live once. This won’t be the last either, I’m super chuffed with it, the boy did a great job. 🙂 If you don’t have a clue what this is about (shame on you) it’s from my favourite episode of Dexter’s Lab. After I was repeatedly jabbed with ink I cycled down to the pub and showed Sam what I gone done.

Do you want this stick Ronnie?

Friday was like an episode of Scrap Heap Challenge but Oz style and with next to no budget. Me, Nat, Alex and Alex’s friend Tony went to a car graveyard to rip some doors off an old Triumph Stag (I can’t help but hear Clarkson saying this in his Jaaaaag voice) whilst also tearing up an old Barina (Corsa in the UK) for it’s brake disc’s. Was quite a fun day out actually. I also got a phone call about a weeks worth of labouring next week, which is a boost.

Dodgy characters in this place...

Dodgy characters in this place…

Continuing the afternoon TV programming theme Saturday was like an episode of Pimp My Ride but with less Xzibit or heterosexual make-up. We attempted to clean up the roof of Nat’s old car as some of the clear coat had been eaten by the sun. There wasn’t much success had with our sandpaper and polish but it was left in a state where Alex could spray it. I then did my tax return (this needs to be done here by all Aussie’s), I’ve never done one in my life. With a helping hand, cup of tea and tax software installed I had it done in no time, wasn’t that taxing! Ahahaha…

On Lazy Sunday I made a sour cream bundt cake that looks like a glazed donut and was under cooked, it’ll still get eaten. Sam & Basha came round and we drank home brew, ate pizza and watched the Bombers DESTROY the Magpies. 🙂

Snow, in Oz. Plus a brewery visit.

At the start of the week I bottled my latest home brew, a clone of Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale. In about two weeks time it should be ready to drink and judged by the home brew club again. I got a good few bottles this time thanks to it not pissing all over the floor… I also made burgers.

Tuesday I cycled down the creek and along to the Palace hotel pub in South Melbourne to use one of my vouchers, buy one pint get another free. I ended up getting a free pot too as the tap had run out, bonus. I wasn’t down here just for the pub though (honest) but for tight arse Tuesday at Crown cinema (where I also got free popcorn, which would have been good if it wasn’t for the crappy salty sh*te you get here). I watched Tom Cruise’s latest sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow where he constantly dies, over and over again. Aliens, guns, robot suits, explosions and lots of CGI meant it was never going to be an epic in my book but feeling merry thanks to the beers it was enjoyable enough to watch. After that it was the pub again but up at the Great Northern. Met my Irish recruitment agent John and Sam here for a chat, steaks and beer.

BEER

Next day I had to go out to Clayton and literally turn something off then back on again. Living the IT Crowd stereotype there. Nat’s dad Alex was looking to get some RAM for Robyn’s laptop so I roped him into giving me a lift then we’d pop past a computer shop. We also had lunch at St Kilda beach which was really nice along with the weather, 18C that day!

Up early on Thursday for a 3 hour road trip with Nat and Alana to Mt Buller. I was quite excited about this as I’d get to hike up a big ass mountain covered in snow! 😀 The girls would be boarding but I hiked to save some pennies. The trip there was fecking foggy but thankfully once we arrived at the mountain it cleared into beautiful sunny skies. I’ve got to be honest here but before coming to Oz I assumed snow was very much a foreign thing so it was a bit of a shocker considering how much bloody snow there was on this hill. I got a map at the tourist office and headed to the summit. I appeared to be the only edjit walking about, it did feel strange navigating the slopes in the wrong direction with skiers & boarders whizzing past me. There wasn’t much indication of a path so I navigated to the summit the best I could. It was pretty sketchy at the top as it was a very narrow path up with death looming on either side, the views up here were completely worth it though. I couldn’t believe it when a skier sauntered up the path and told me he was going down from here. Nutter. After the summit I met the girls at the pub then went wandering again whilst they threw themselves down the hill. It was a bloody great day that, the hills reminded me a wee bit of home. 🙂

On Friday I went down to Nat’s house and helped with weeding silicon prints for a whole bunch of tee’s she’s selling for Rose St market that weekend. One print of Flinders St (a very cool print so it is) took me at least an hour to do. WTF. Afterwards I met up with Robyn, Kath and Alana for round 2 of Ethiopian food, this time in Moonee Ponds. Food was probably better here than the restaurant in Footscray, we still ate with our hands and I left feeling like a pregnant whale.

Weeding like a pro

Weeding like a pro

Saturday morning I cycled down to Rose St market to see how the stall was doing whilst chilling out before meeting Luke (home brew mate) at Moon Dog Brewery. It’s located in Abbotsford literally in the lions den of Carlton United Breweries, they make Carlton Draught (think Tennents) and export Fosters, nuff said. Housed in a small warehouse with a few sofa’s sprawled about the place and a few long tables, the second hand dairy equipment brewery is in the back behind the bar. Me and Luke went on the brewery tour which is fairly short and sweet much like the brewery, Mattias (one of the brewers) showed me the bottling line and some of the chiraz barrels they have. Anyway, we had a good few drinks here then I left to hangout with Rose and Jezza at her house.

I got a message from Nat the next morning that I’d made her business partner (Rose) turn up late to the market and she’d setup the stall herself. Oops! I wasn’t feeling too fly myself so got my bake on and made a peach & almond tart. Brought it down to Nat’s folks house where it got a big thumbs up. Nat popped by and we all stuffed our faces at a local Chinese restaurant. The Bombers also won their game yesterday against Port Adelaide so pretty good Sunday all in all.

Eating like peasants & a warehouse party

I’ve walked Ronnie nearly everyday this week, maybe I should look into this as full-time work. He seems to have a fascination with water as he’s always choking himself on the lead to get a few mm’s closer. I must’ve bathed him twice this week after he had a few swims in the creek. Fudge knows what the rain has washed up in there…

Tuesday was my good mate Bob’s so Happy Birthday to him! Must only be a stones throw away from the big 3-0 now? In the evening I met up with my ‘Merri Mashers‘ crew down at the Gertrude Hotel, a moderately swish establishment with $14 parma’s on a Tuesday and plenty of good beer on tap. We weren’t here mainly for the tap stuff but the home brewed instead (which they allowed us to drink upstairs in the function room). There were many here to sample from including Belgian Tripel’s, oak aged stouts, pale ale’s and my favourite of the night a double IPA. I’d brought along a few bottles of my Dark Island clone, anxious to hear what the guys had to say. I was pleasantly surprised after the 4 bottles had disappeared with not a single bad word said with some evening saying it was the best of the night. 😀

The next morning was a little fuzzy but well worth it. After Ronnie’s walk Nat came by after her work and we drove to an Ethiopian restaurant in Footscray. I’d never been to one before so was interested in finding out what dishes would be served (at this point a joke made in Brussels by my mate Gav popped into my head, something about stingy portions… ;-)). The menu choice was minimal and somewhat of a gamble as the descriptions were rather basic (waitress didn’t help too much either). We picked three dishes to share with the plan being we’d order more when Kath and Rose turn up. This was not necessary. The dishes came out on one big serving tray and looked deceptively small (it wasn’t a joke!), they also lie on top of three huge pancakes. This is where it gets interesting as there is no cutlery. Nada. Nuffin’. What you use is your hands to tear away at the pancake and scoop up the goodness. I loved it! I also got to try two different Ethiopian beers. By the time Rose and Kath rocked up we were done, I tried my best but I couldn’t quite destroy it all. Bloody pancakes.

I hope you washed yer hands Nat

Thursday I made a super nom spaghetti carbonara thanks to Marco Pierre White. This was the highlight of my day.

Friday I went for another good long walk to Two Row bar (it was open this time) and spent my voucher for buy one get one free on tasting paddles. Spent about an hour & a half nursing these before heading North to Temple Brewing where I spent another voucher on their ‘Midnight Burger’ and some beer tasters. Mon was locked out of the house so (luckily for me) I was able to get a lift back home. Me and Nick then went off to the pub to watch the Bombers lose by 9 horrid points to the Cats. I should’ve actually been at this match but there was a problem with getting the tickets. Back home, and rather intoxicated, I attempted to stay up for the 2am foozball match only to realise it was the wrong day (thanks Chris) so I went to bed.

Saturday I crash cooled and dry hopped my latest batch of beer which is smelling gooooooooooood! 🙂 I also baked a Madeira cake to partly celebrate one of my bestest and long serving friends Maritza. Happy Birthday! Stuffed with round two carbonara and swedging on the couch watching Rio on the box I got a call from Rose to say her and Jezza were going to a warehouse party to watch Brazil vs Chile and would I like to come. Aye all right then! I walked down to Rose’s flat picking up a dozen Torpedo’s on the way and got to meet Jezza’s dad Ross who owns a farm up in Beechworth. He’s a great dude, we chatted about shooting feral cats, foxes, their local brewery, Scotland and Thomas Glover (what a dude, jebus this boy essentially made Japan what it is today). Eventually we got a taxi to this warehouse in Fitzroy where things get a bit blurry… long neck (600ml) bottles of 7% beer are mostly to blame here. There was a DJ booth setup, some folks kicking a ball about in the front, log fire stove pumping out heat and the projector screen at the back. From what I remember it was a good night (but not for Chile).

The next morning I woke up on Rose’s sofa not feeling very bright eyed or bushy tailed. A couple of coffee shots and some cheese & tomato toasties later I was back on the road, destination home (typical it was raining). Not much to say about Sunday other than I don’t want to experience it again. I did manage to watch another Aussie film though, ‘He died with a falafel in his hand‘, which was rather entertaining.

Hobo experience & reggae overdose

On Monday I took wee Ronnie out for a walk. We followed the creek North for a bit until I couldn’t cross one part without potentially falling in, so we turned back. We both got soaked anyway as it pissed it down on multiple occasions. Ronnie loved it though. Got home, traded in wet clothes for dry then prepared some brioche dough (it takes at least 6 hours in the fridge so Michel Roux tells me). Couldn’t be arsed cooking so took advantage of the local pizza place’s offer of $6 pizza’s, and bought two. Large pizza’s here are like medium size back home, still I was suitably stuffed.

Tuesday I did some IT work but not before baking the brioche. It turned out well but didn’t quite taste how I expected it too, less sweet.

Looks good eh?

Looks good eh?

Not content with yesterdays baking I turned the brioche into bread and butter pudding. This was pretty bloody nom and didn’t last long between me and the girls (having it for next days breakfast and lunch also helped).

Thursday I had a nice long walk to Fitzroy with the intention of using a voucher (buy one tasting paddle get another FREE) in a bar called Two Row, new and aimed towards good beer. It was shut. I don’t understand, most pubs/bars in Melbourne don’t open until 4pm on a weekday. I thought these Aussie drank a lot? What about the people that want beer all the time? Defeated I headed further down to Richmond where I also planned to spend another voucher in a bottle shop, but then decided I couldn’t be assed carrying it about (I was heading to work after all). Jumped on a train to Clayton, did IT jobbies and finished with a true hobo experience with Sam, sitting next to the train station slurping on a beer in a brown paper bag. It felt gooooood. 😉 (I must admit here that it was a bottle of Hoegaarden underneath that brown paper bag, got to have SOME class).

Friday morning I cycled down to Yarraville to pick-up some hops & grains for my next brew. Later I also sampled one of my Dark Island clone’s which is tasting bloody delicious considering it’s not at it’s peak yet! This will stem my cravings for the real stuff for a bit and I’m keen to find out what the homebrew boys think. Beer savoured I sauntered down to Nat’s folks house to see her new car (a very clean Subaru Outback) and have food with the family as it was Robyn’s birthday. I would have baked a cake if I’d known. We stuffed our faces at a local (swish) Japanese restaurant. I opted for the seafood bento as my main, complete with grilled eel, very nom. Unexpectedly this night turned into a bit of a bender… Me and Nat went to the Reverence pub in Footscray where some of her old mates were hanging out. We stayed here for a reggae gig then a bunch of us headed into town for ANOTHER reggae gig. Long story short there was lots of beer and reggae music and we all got fairly smeshed.

The next day was slow. On days like this baking, I find, to be a good remedy. After cleaning myself up I went to the shops for ingredients. Chatted to a woman in a deli shop who noticed I was drinking Irn Bru (also a good remedy) and told me a butcher in Dandenong sells loads of imported UK produce. Noted. Got home and made coconut macaroons, these are so good warm from the oven. The day got even sweeter when the Bombers won their match against the Crows.

Today is my good mate Chris’s birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY Afro you old sod. Today was also my 4th brew day here in Australia. I cloned a beer that I love to drink here, Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale. The beer turned out well (will still need to wait a few weeks to see if that’s actually true) but it’s just a pity it took ALL FECKING DAY to get it done. Me and my urn are not getting on well… Anyway it’s done and I’m slurping on my dark ale away to watch the Trailer Park Boys film. Ahhh… 🙂

The World Cup starts and I sort of care about it

After the weekends camping adventures I was glad that I wasn’t working on Tuesday, Monday night I basically passed out. I spent the time wisely, mostly doing nothing, then prepping Rowies for baking (oh how I miss thee so!), baking a big pasta bake and meeting Ben, Sam and Basha at the pub for usual steak and beers. The night was very civilised with us all leaving at a reasonable time. Been awhile.

Wednesday I was back on-site with the lads then off to Clayton with Sam in the evening for IT shizz. Also that day was my Dad’s birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HIM. 😀 Me and Sam popped past the pub on the way home. Actually we went to a bottleshop first as the trains weren’t running and the replacement bus was 20mins away. Young & Jacksons is one of Melbourne’s oldest pubs located right next to Flinders St station, been meaning to go there for awhile so I decided that’s where we’d go. They serve craft beer in an almost British style pub environment.

The next day I got to bake those Rowies which were left proving for 2 days. They turned out good but not good enough, I know what I need to adjust for next time (less lard + longer second prove). I also did more IT work that day.

Rowie and jam = FINE

Rowie and jam = FINE

On Friday I was back helping install kitchens, move stuff, clean things, banter, etc. As we move up the floors in the building it’s getting a tad scarier receiving deliveries as they are dropped into a room with no exterior wall via a glorified forklift. I’m not a fan of heights. After work I bought a bunch of beers and had a good Skype session with my Dad, Carol and youngest sister Kirsty. 😀 Oh and it was also one of my mates birthdays on that day too, June is packed with bloody birthdays, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFNER. 🙂

Oh yeah the World Cup is on. Now I’m not a MASSIVE fan of foozball but I do enjoy watching it (especially in the stadium) and the World Cup I always find entertaining even though Scotland aren’t in it. Here in Oz though it’s a lot more difficult to put the effort into watching it as most matches start at 2am, 5am or 8am. I’m not THAT interested in watching it. However, 8am I can deal with and I wanted to see the Socceroo’s play their first match against Chile live. Not only that but watch in style with a slap up breakfast of pancakes, bacon, maple syrup and cream washed down with a beer. Even MORE crazy I attempted to make a weaved bacon basket to eat the pancakes out of. This failed. Next time… Anyway the Roo’s lost so my mates Maritza and Chris’s dad will be chuffed, he’s Chilean. Once the ball had stopped being kicked about I bottled my Dark Island clone. I can’t wait for this to be ready so I can taste it’s glory, patience though at least a week or two’s wait. 🙂

Most of the weekend I massively vegged, I didn’t shower or leave the house yesterday, I’ve been chilling watching re-run matches of the football at reasonable times. Weather has been a bit pish too, you Aberdonians are getting it better than us! Pfft. Today I went for a walk to the Terminus pub using a voucher to get a schooner of beer alongside two Vietnamese style pulled pork buns for $10. WIN. Then I headed to Blackhearts & Sparrows beer and wine shop in North Fitzroy to use another voucher which got me a free glass growler plus $5 off my first fill of beer (which was over 3 pints of Little Creatures Red Ale). Another WIN. I spent the rest of the day drinking that and watching AFL with a splash of Trailer Park Boys. Very relaxed weekend.

Adventure Camping Times!

At the start of last week I got told that my days on the work-site would be reduced, slow production of the kitchens at the factory meant my workload fell. Not what I wanted to hear but thankfully my IT work was still ongoing.

Tight arse Tuesday I wandered over to the Northcote cinema and watched ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘. I really enjoy Wes Anderson’s stuff, his style is so recognisable and showcases many talented actors. This film is definitely more adult themed than the others he has done, a bit of sexy there and violence here, but also still bloody funny. Dan gives this film a Thumbs Up. Afterwards I met up with Sam at the usual, to eat the usual and have a few jugs of the usual.

We drank a fair selection of beers that night, enough to give me a bit of a mind blank… Did I pay before leaving?! My bank card and ID in my wallet would assure me that I did. On that Wednesday I headed out to Clayton and worked 9-6pm without a single blooming break. On the way home a nasty drunk was terrorising the tram I was on but a few stops later was wrestled off by about 5 cops. A few beers were needed that night, Punk IPA tinnies sorted me out.

Talking about beer (is he joking?) Thursday morning I cycled down to my local homebrew store to pick-up some grains and hops, today I would be brewing a ‘Dark Island’ clone. Well at least it should be roughly the same, as long as it’s dark and tastes fecking scrummy I’ll be a happy chappy. I brewed the same day and was being mucked around by my boiler, it was cutting out and just being a general pain in the ass. Reluctantly I was forced to become an electrician for about 5 minutes as I tore out a fuse, bypassed it then turned on the boiler again praising Jebus I wouldn’t be zapped. It all worked out fine though and the boiler kicked back into life. 3rd brew here, I’m feeling optimistic about this one… 🙂

Friday was an early start being back on-site with the boys. I’d brought my backpack with me as the plan that weekend was to go camping. I wasn’t sure where but I’d received a text from Rose just a day or two before about it, saying that Nat and some others would be going. I just said Yes. After work I got the train into the city, briefly looked about for a sleeping bag but gave up then headed to Rose’s hoose, the meet up point. Not too long after arriving Fayez and his girlfriend Annie turned up then Jeremy (Jezza). The plan of camping that night all ready crumbling at my feet with Nat pulling out, Jezza too then Rose. Fayez and Annie were determined to go that night so they did. The remaining three ended up drinking and visiting Nat & Kath’s house but we were all in agreement that an early start was needed to rejoin our comrades.

Surprisingly we were up before 8am the next day, feeling slightly zombie-like with less of a hunger for brains but more water and an egg & bacon roll. It took a few hours for us to get sorted, buy extra food, wait for Jezza to get up and finally hit the road. The journey there shouldn’t actually take that long (90mins) but we managed to double the time needed, to be fair though we were in no rush and it was a lovely drive. I also got to see Roo’s in the wild for the first time! 😀 The camping spot was located at O’Briens Crossing in Lerderderg Forest (think of Team America when you say that name) which is part of the Wombat State Forest. Once we entered the forest it was still a good few km’s of dirt road to the site which, thankfully, wasn’t a proper camp-site but a lovely spot right next to the creek. Fayez and Annie were here from the night before so the spot was sorted all we needed to do was setup the tarp and our tent. Fire on the go and beers cracked open, ahhhh this is what it’s all about, get away from the city, this is what I want to do more of. Nat turned up about an hour after us then the night really kicked off with tunes, toasted marshmallows, booze, chat, baked tatties and other stuff I can’t remember.

Fairly pimpin' setup right there

Fairly pimpin’ setup right there

The next day was tough for everyone, especially Jezza who attempted to pitch his tent on the other side of the creek whilst having polished off a bottle of Laphroaig whisky. He was the last to wake. At least we had proper coffee (in the cafetiere’s) and I cooked up a bunch of sausages. The Sunday would be a very relaxed and subdued one, weather was great and there was no need to do anything. I did attempt to chop up a felled tree with no major success, Woodsman Dan I’m clearly not (I think it’s because I didn’t have a lumberjack shirt on). Dinner that night was fantastic, Fayez and Annie cooked up a storm with spicy beef bolognese and pasta followed by baked peanut butter chocolate banana’s. Oh NOM. I love camp-fire cooking it just feels so much more rewarding. We worked through the last of our booze and had a very civilised last night in the woods.

Thanks to the Queen being born a while back Monday was a public holiday for all. I was awoken by a Kookaburra screaming out his monkey noises just a few metres from the tent. First up so I got the fire going in preparation for morning coffee and food. It’s a great feeling waking up in the wilderness. Once everyone else was up and the fire set in it’s ways I got breakfast under way, with Rose chopping up the rest of the veg it was chucked in a pan with about 10 eggs then left to bubble away. The group agreed it was rather tasty. The camp was then packed up with a high degree of efficiency and we stopped off at the pub, The Pig and Whistle, just outside the entrance to the forest for a pint. As soon as we’d left the Wombat State Forest Jezza had the car stopped and backed up. Road kill, just like home, is fairly common here but instead of rabbits and the odd deer it’s wombat’s and roo’s. Tagged by a ranger and lying next to the road was a female wombat and her child resting on top of her. First time I’ve seen these animals in the wild, very grim circumstances. After the pub we headed back to Melbourne and into another pub, Town Hall, in North Melbourne. I destroyed a cheese and bacon smothered parma, Jebus was a stuffed after that. Got a lift home, chucked clothes in the wash (I hadn’t changed for 3 days), chucked myself in for a wash then KO’d once my head hit the pillow.

I bloody loved this weekend, one of the best times I’ve had in Oz so far. 😀
