Eating like peasants & a warehouse party

I’ve walked Ronnie nearly everyday this week, maybe I should look into this as full-time work. He seems to have a fascination with water as he’s always choking himself on the lead to get a few mm’s closer. I must’ve bathed him twice this week after he had a few swims in the creek. Fudge knows what the rain has washed up in there…

Tuesday was my good mate Bob’s so Happy Birthday to him! Must only be a stones throw away from the big 3-0 now? In the evening I met up with my ‘Merri Mashers‘ crew down at the Gertrude Hotel, a moderately swish establishment with $14 parma’s on a Tuesday and plenty of good beer on tap. We weren’t here mainly for the tap stuff but the home brewed instead (which they allowed us to drink upstairs in the function room). There were many here to sample from including Belgian Tripel’s, oak aged stouts, pale ale’s and my favourite of the night a double IPA. I’d brought along a few bottles of my Dark Island clone, anxious to hear what the guys had to say. I was pleasantly surprised after the 4 bottles had disappeared with not a single bad word said with some evening saying it was the best of the night. 😀

The next morning was a little fuzzy but well worth it. After Ronnie’s walk Nat came by after her work and we drove to an Ethiopian restaurant in Footscray. I’d never been to one before so was interested in finding out what dishes would be served (at this point a joke made in Brussels by my mate Gav popped into my head, something about stingy portions… ;-)). The menu choice was minimal and somewhat of a gamble as the descriptions were rather basic (waitress didn’t help too much either). We picked three dishes to share with the plan being we’d order more when Kath and Rose turn up. This was not necessary. The dishes came out on one big serving tray and looked deceptively small (it wasn’t a joke!), they also lie on top of three huge pancakes. This is where it gets interesting as there is no cutlery. Nada. Nuffin’. What you use is your hands to tear away at the pancake and scoop up the goodness. I loved it! I also got to try two different Ethiopian beers. By the time Rose and Kath rocked up we were done, I tried my best but I couldn’t quite destroy it all. Bloody pancakes.

I hope you washed yer hands Nat

Thursday I made a super nom spaghetti carbonara thanks to Marco Pierre White. This was the highlight of my day.

Friday I went for another good long walk to Two Row bar (it was open this time) and spent my voucher for buy one get one free on tasting paddles. Spent about an hour & a half nursing these before heading North to Temple Brewing where I spent another voucher on their ‘Midnight Burger’ and some beer tasters. Mon was locked out of the house so (luckily for me) I was able to get a lift back home. Me and Nick then went off to the pub to watch the Bombers lose by 9 horrid points to the Cats. I should’ve actually been at this match but there was a problem with getting the tickets. Back home, and rather intoxicated, I attempted to stay up for the 2am foozball match only to realise it was the wrong day (thanks Chris) so I went to bed.

Saturday I crash cooled and dry hopped my latest batch of beer which is smelling gooooooooooood! 🙂 I also baked a Madeira cake to partly celebrate one of my bestest and long serving friends Maritza. Happy Birthday! Stuffed with round two carbonara and swedging on the couch watching Rio on the box I got a call from Rose to say her and Jezza were going to a warehouse party to watch Brazil vs Chile and would I like to come. Aye all right then! I walked down to Rose’s flat picking up a dozen Torpedo’s on the way and got to meet Jezza’s dad Ross who owns a farm up in Beechworth. He’s a great dude, we chatted about shooting feral cats, foxes, their local brewery, Scotland and Thomas Glover (what a dude, jebus this boy essentially made Japan what it is today). Eventually we got a taxi to this warehouse in Fitzroy where things get a bit blurry… long neck (600ml) bottles of 7% beer are mostly to blame here. There was a DJ booth setup, some folks kicking a ball about in the front, log fire stove pumping out heat and the projector screen at the back. From what I remember it was a good night (but not for Chile).

The next morning I woke up on Rose’s sofa not feeling very bright eyed or bushy tailed. A couple of coffee shots and some cheese & tomato toasties later I was back on the road, destination home (typical it was raining). Not much to say about Sunday other than I don’t want to experience it again. I did manage to watch another Aussie film though, ‘He died with a falafel in his hand‘, which was rather entertaining.

It’s beer makin’ time!

Today I mostly spent indoors BUT for good reason as I was getting my brew awwwwwwn! 😀

I’m not going to do a write up as it would generally bore the pants off of the handful of readers, essentially it’s my first brew in Oz and first using a Brew-In-A-Bag (BIAB) method (which apparently originated in Australia). I’ve done a clone of BrewDog’s Punk IPA so fingers crossed in just under a months time it will be tasty as fook.

Barbie Roo!

Didn’t get the best of sleep but I was up and ready when Nat came back from here pilates, first stop was Bunnings (B&Q) to get my keys cut. We then popped past a Western Union joint to get some birthday money from my Dad (thanks!). Feeling the hunger we popped past Rose’s house to have food at the asian place just around the corner. Rose’s mate Greg was there and he looked like Crocodile Dundee. 🙂 I nom’d on some pad thai. There are lots of asian restaurants and massage places in Melbourne I noticed, and asian people.

After food Nat was keen to splurdge her money on a new wakeboard so we went past the shop to get one in time for tomorrows antics. That done (and Nat chuffed as) we headed home (via good ol’ Dan Murphy’s bottle shop for some Torpedo Extra IPA, lovely stuff) and cleaned out the garage a bit.

Roo on the barbie!

Roo on the barbie!

Armed with beers we walked 5 minutes down the road to Nat’s folks house for a barbie. Got to meet her mum Robin, ate lots of ‘roo (delicious!), talked about many things and left with a jigsaw puzzle. There is even some old home brew kit that they said I could have and they also pointed out Aldi will be selling mountain bikes dirt cheap on Wednesday so I’ll be looking to pick one up. Barbie today was great! 😀

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

(and Luke I suppose…)

Yup 28 today and I think this is the first time I’ve spent a birthday away from home, couldn’t have picked a place further away eh? There was no real plans today other than to get a bank account setup and possibly a tax file number. None of this happened.

We did go to the super market though (desperate need of loo roll) and I splurged on butcher meet, deli cheese and loads of other stuff (Irn Bru!) in Coles. Loved it. Nat had to meet a dude that was picking up tee’s from the festival so we nipped past a bottle shop drive thru for some beers. This kind of booze service signifies to me that Oz definitely takes the crown of problem drinkers from us Scots. Nat got me some Punk IPA for my birthday. 🙂

Chilled at the house with another of Nat’s mates (Monica), drank some beer, made mac & cheese (yas!) then headed off to explore town a wee bit. Sorted me out with a MyKi transport card, much like the Beijing one I can use it for buses, trains, trams, etc. A short walk to the train station we were off to Southern Cross Station and a tram up the hill. You feel a massive difference in the city with it’s grid like formation, tall buildings, trams everywhere, yellow cabs scooting about, feels a bit like an American city to be honest.

Melbourne Central Station

Melbourne Central Station

We went to a pub next to one of the main rivers running through the city, the Yarra River. Sitting outside enjoying the views of the city was great, prices of a pint ($12) not so much! We then walked/trammed it to another part of the city scooting past Chinatown (need to check that out) and Central Station then into Dejavu for a crafty $6 pint (proper beer, good tunes and a special for Wednesdays).

Again on a tram and a quick scoot through the Queen Victoria Night Market which looks bloody awesome! It’s housed under a huge set of roofs with shed loads of different food being cooked away, it smelled great! Bloody busy though and I wasn’t actually hungry so didn’t buy anything, this time (it’s on every Wednesday). We went up to Rose’s house (a really cool converted warehouse studio type thing) for a few beers and pie’s before heading back home (Nat was shattered).

Took three different forms of public transport, visited two pubs, wandered the streets, eyed up the night market and did a food shop. Today was pretty good. 🙂

(I know fail on photo’s but I’ve got time!)

Street barber’s and stupid board games

I left the house a good bit earlier than I normally would, the back of 8AM, as I was keen to arrive at the pub earlier (for my Skype chat with Nat, honest that’s the true…) and get a jidan guan bing for breakfast. 🙂 This breakfast street food favourite of mine usually stops selling around 10AM and today I got mine with meat in it (possibly pork or chicken) which made it extra tasty! This may also increase the likelihood of having a case of the shits tomorrow, time will tell. I was also offered the services of a street barber (yup on the street, somewhat common here) to shave my beard. Haha! I told him I liked my beard, he said something, I laughed then continued walking. (I realise I need to take more pictures but it’s hard to remember sometimes when everything seems fairly ‘normal’)

Got to the pub early enough that it wasn’t even open, they kindly opened up for me though and I had a pint in my hand before noon, probably a bad thing. Was soon on Skype having a good ol’ blether to my mate Nat (she and a mate were making tee’s and stuff for the festival) this will most likely be the last chat with her until we meet again in the flesh in a little over a week. The excitement is building. 🙂 Enda wasn’t working today so no chat from him, I ate a salad (Yup! A salad. Had blue cheese in it though), surfed the net then bailed.

Much like in the morning I left earlier than usual so decided to skip a few stations and walk instead. Navigating a few hutong’s and popping out next to Yong He Gong Lama Temple I nipped into a wee import shop in Wudaoying hutong and bought a bottle of Punk IPA (it’s cheap here at 28RMB/2.80GBP) then hit the streets like a slightly upper class hobo (definitely something I’ll miss doing). Got on the subway at Guloudajie and headed home.

Opened the door to a bunch of people, some other A Yi’s and Benjamin’s mates, I left them too it and chilled in my room. Randy turned up to tutor Benjamin and over tea I found out the wee one had scored 90.5% in his Chinese test. Top job! I honestly thought it would be a chunk worse than that… After tea we played a game of ‘Weiqi‘ which was my first (get the excuses in) and he subsequently kicked my ass. Always a wee bit demoralising getting beaten by a 7 year old. He had his maths test today and tomorrow is a day off (news to me!) so if the weather is good we will be playing outside. Fooshiz.

The zombies are coming…

Ice ice baby

Ice ice baby

I left early this morning for another 3 hour walk to the pub. There was a dog prancing about in glass like grass, all covered in ice, as I followed the frozen river. I also had to double take a company car I noticed parked beside the street I was walking down…

And you thought it was just a game

And you thought it was just a game

When I got to the pub I was going to try out one of their new salads but fearing small portions I opted for the burger and chips, I was fecking hungry. Wheat IPA was on for 25RMB/2.50GBP, fairly tasty. Did my usual catch up with the world and occasional glance at the NFL. Enda was a busy dude but he did say that his 12 Pubs of Christmas was more like 4 and was very messy, fun but messy. Part of me wished I could have joined in, the other part glad I didn’t.

Left the pub and took the subway to Beitucheng then got off to check the park that follows the river (and to walk the rest of the way home). It accounted for just under half the journey home, was nice and peaceful though. In total I must have walked around 15 miles today. 🙂

HOERS

HOERS

Another big meal was on display (I’m telling you all guns are firing when the father is home) and I asked Randy if he was off for Christmas day, since it’s not a recognised holiday here he most likely wouldn’t. Bit of a bummer that as I’m planning on going to Happy Valley (either way I’m going!). After tea I helped Benjamin do his homework then we ran around shooting each other with guns.

Beijing Homebrew Festival

Jebus the internet is stressing me out here, so-fecking-slow. Gah! 😦 Anyway…

Me and Benjamin played a bit of basketball (sort of) outside before tucking into a massive noodle and sausage lunch, perfect stomach lining for the day ahead. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be a long one as the bloody access card to get into the building wasn’t working, I didn’t want to be buzzing at 3am…

I arrived at the NBeer mall just before 2pm with the homebrew festival in full swing, paid my 50RMB/5GBP and had a look around. There were many tables setup around the ground floor of the mall, most of them littered with homebrew’s (obviously) but some showing off malts, hops and also food.

Yay!

Yay!

Spying some homebrew equipment I got chatting to the owners of ‘Panda Brew‘, a homebrew start up that kicked of this year but now boasts two pubs, a huge bottling line and 60000L brewing equipment (he showed me the photo’s). WTF. I do get the feeling they are expanding WAY beyond their market at the moment though…

After sampling various beers (including a sour grape one, not again thanks) Henry arrived and we got chatting to Mike Sherretz, owner of the only homebrew shop in Shanghai. Really nice guy and he has over 30 years of brewing experience and boy could you tell, his beers were fantastic! (The IPA and Coconut Porter were delish) It was no surprise when he won three awards that night including the overall champion.

Mike's awesome beers

Randy arrived and a few pints later we tucked into some burrito’s at the Mexican joint next door. Yuki and her mate arrived and after food everyone bailed, I stayed and chatted more with Mike and his German business mate (sales dude for Braumeister equipment). I also got talking to <cant-remember-his-name> from ‘Yellow Horse‘ nanobrewery (I was at the launch of their beers and went to KTV with them) about lots of stuff. He learnt English from watching loads of movies, haha amazing.

At this point I had to call it a night (gah!) but it was a great day foshiz. 😀

The Song And Dance Troupe Of General Political Department, PLA

Today I left the house a little before 9AM for a long walk, to stretch my legs, see the sights and maybe burn a handful of calories. My destination? The pub of course. To be fair Google told me the walk was 16km/10miles and I did it in around 3 hours. So what did I see… not much to be honest. There was a political dance troupe building (see photo) that confused me a little and I got whistled at (by a traffic warden). It was a nice walk though and only fuelled on a cup of coffee so when I arrived at Great Leap food and a beer was much needed.

Next show is 'Communist Cats: The Musical'

They had some new additions to the menu, I had a quick scan and decided to try the chicken burger. It was good (a chunky bit of chicken, not a processed breaded burger) but a wee bit messy to eat, nicely washed down by their ‘Little General IPA’. I was chatting to Enda (he seemed like a busy loon today) and he said they might be at the homebrew festival this weekend, a poster was up on the main door. I also had another sample of the strong lager they (accidentally) made, it was being released today as it’s Lager Day? (In Scotland I think that’s everyday…)

The saas is fecking awesome too

I arrived home not long before Benjamin was to have his class with Randy. We hadn’t done his homework as ‘free time’ is an unknown phase at the moment. After tea Benjamin got a wee telling off so I only seen him for a few minutes. No Lego tonight and I attempted to learn about how language came to be but the WiFi died. It just won’t give me a break that thing.

Obama wants YOU to buy his clothes!

I was planning on checking out a clothes shop this morning (Tee Tale) but due to a lack of sleep last night (fudge knows why) I rised later than usual. Also I then got distracted by TaoBao (China eBay essentially) as the shop had an outlet on there. China’s bargains, just like everywhere else, are slowing switching to the internetz and you can get stuff pretty cheap on here. Best searched in Chinese as it’s not an English site but you get what you want eventually. This grabbed my attention until lunchtime and as I had planned to go to Great Leap so I told Goa A Yi and bailed.

Obama does modelling now? Check out his tatt's.

So there IS a deal in No.12 where you get a burger and Pale Ale #6 for 45RMB/4.50GBP, so I’m going to always kick off with that. Total steal. I also ended up getting their ‘Imperial Pumpkin Ale’ for free, again not sure how but I didn’t complain. I got chatting to the assistant brewer as he thrust another sample of beer (not ready until at least a week yet) under my nose, this time their lager which tasted good (for a lager) but more bitter than I would expect, I told him as much. He said I was like their Official Tasting Panel and he would show me around the brewery next week. Eh Awesome! 😀

4 pound fiddy for this lot? Not bad.

4 pound fiddy for this lot? Not bad.

I stayed for another pint (Wheat IPA) whilst watching NFL, catching up on the world and observing one of the staff members spend an eternity updating the tap list board. He was doing his best and I praised as much (whilst also laughing along with the rest of the staff).

Randy was tutoring Benjamin so we played outside for a bit. Benjamin spent so long doing his homework that we had no time to do anything else. Class tomorrow, better revise.
