Hobo experience & reggae overdose

On Monday I took wee Ronnie out for a walk. We followed the creek North for a bit until I couldn’t cross one part without potentially falling in, so we turned back. We both got soaked anyway as it pissed it down on multiple occasions. Ronnie loved it though. Got home, traded in wet clothes for dry then prepared some brioche dough (it takes at least 6 hours in the fridge so Michel Roux tells me). Couldn’t be arsed cooking so took advantage of the local pizza place’s offer of $6 pizza’s, and bought two. Large pizza’s here are like medium size back home, still I was suitably stuffed.

Tuesday I did some IT work but not before baking the brioche. It turned out well but didn’t quite taste how I expected it too, less sweet.

Looks good eh?

Not content with yesterdays baking I turned the brioche into bread and butter pudding. This was pretty bloody nom and didn’t last long between me and the girls (having it for next days breakfast and lunch also helped).

Thursday I had a nice long walk to Fitzroy with the intention of using a voucher (buy one tasting paddle get another FREE) in a bar called Two Row, new and aimed towards good beer. It was shut. I don’t understand, most pubs/bars in Melbourne don’t open until 4pm on a weekday. I thought these Aussie drank a lot? What about the people that want beer all the time? Defeated I headed further down to Richmond where I also planned to spend another voucher in a bottle shop, but then decided I couldn’t be assed carrying it about (I was heading to work after all). Jumped on a train to Clayton, did IT jobbies and finished with a true hobo experience with Sam, sitting next to the train station slurping on a beer in a brown paper bag. It felt gooooood. 😉 (I must admit here that it was a bottle of Hoegaarden underneath that brown paper bag, got to have SOME class).

Friday morning I cycled down to Yarraville to pick-up some hops & grains for my next brew. Later I also sampled one of my Dark Island clone’s which is tasting bloody delicious considering it’s not at it’s peak yet! This will stem my cravings for the real stuff for a bit and I’m keen to find out what the homebrew boys think. Beer savoured I sauntered down to Nat’s folks house to see her new car (a very clean Subaru Outback) and have food with the family as it was Robyn’s birthday. I would have baked a cake if I’d known. We stuffed our faces at a local (swish) Japanese restaurant. I opted for the seafood bento as my main, complete with grilled eel, very nom. Unexpectedly this night turned into a bit of a bender… Me and Nat went to the Reverence pub in Footscray where some of her old mates were hanging out. We stayed here for a reggae gig then a bunch of us headed into town for ANOTHER reggae gig. Long story short there was lots of beer and reggae music and we all got fairly smeshed.

The next day was slow. On days like this baking, I find, to be a good remedy. After cleaning myself up I went to the shops for ingredients. Chatted to a woman in a deli shop who noticed I was drinking Irn Bru (also a good remedy) and told me a butcher in Dandenong sells loads of imported UK produce. Noted. Got home and made coconut macaroons, these are so good warm from the oven. The day got even sweeter when the Bombers won their match against the Crows.

Today is my good mate Chris’s birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY Afro you old sod. Today was also my 4th brew day here in Australia. I cloned a beer that I love to drink here, Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale. The beer turned out well (will still need to wait a few weeks to see if that’s actually true) but it’s just a pity it took ALL FECKING DAY to get it done. Me and my urn are not getting on well… Anyway it’s done and I’m slurping on my dark ale away to watch the Trailer Park Boys film. Ahhh… 🙂

I love beer festivals

Started my new labouring job this week. In a nutshell I’m up at 5.30am each morning, on site by 7am and helping the boys (Dave, Chris and Nick) install kitchens in a bunch of newly built apartments. So far I’m loving it! 🙂 Sometimes we get away early, as in on time (3.30pm), which frees up the day a bit more. I’m learning loads of new ‘manly’ skills too which, to be honest, I didn’t even think about as this job was just another way to make pennies, a means to an end.

Tuesday I was at the pub, alone, again. Sam and Ben had been roped into helping out in Clayton whereas I refused instead choosing the pub. Turns out though the guys were at the site working until 3am the next morning. WTF. That’s nuts.

On Wednesday there was still IT work that needed finishing off and since Ben was heading back up to Brisbane I wasn’t going to let Sam go in himself. After work I headed over to Clayton where we stayed there until just before midnight. By this point we both wanted beer so got the taxi to drop us off at Dejavu bar where pints of craft beer were going for $6. Safe to say we had a few of these. 🙂

Staying out that wee bit extra that night probably wasn’t a good idea as I got home around 1.30am and had 3 hours sleep before getting up for work. Ugghh. Mon’s dog Ronnie had actually slept with me that night too, haha. Thursday was a tough day and hopefully not to be repeated ever again.

Friday there was still more IT work to be completed, thankfully my labouring work finishes bang on 3.30pm on a Friday and I had no reason to get up early the next day, so after work I headed out to Clayton AGAIN. Full time work + IT work was nice for the pennies but not so nice for the body & mind. We only spent a few hours on site then hit up public transport to ‘The Old Bar‘ in Fitzroy where a few scream metal bands were playing which was entertaining.

Saturday evening I volunteered at the ‘Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular‘ held in the Royal Exhibition Hall and the biggest beer festival in Australia, also the biggest I’ve ever been too. It was such good fun volunteering. 🙂 I was on one of the bars pulling taps to serve the masses loads of scrummy beer. Doing the volunteering work meant I would get free entry into Sundays session, yas. The festival also marked the end of ‘Good Beer Week‘ which I missed most of thanks to being skint and working.

Not the festival though, no way was I missing that! On Sunday I met up with my homebrew clubs vice president Kev (an English Northerner) and we hammered the taps from 12pm to 5pm. My system was finding at least 5 drinks from each sections of the bars, so that’s 6 sections, 5 85ml samples from each section leaving me with at least 30 samples to critique. As I’d volunteered I had a few free tokens plus free drinks from volunteers that I’d worked with the night before who were working that day. Wolfed down some American South style smoked pulled pork with cornbread and slaw. Nom. It was a very good evening indeed and we left feeling a tad tipsy… 😀

Baking cakes, cycling places and eating a bear’s claw

I think on Monday I baked. See this is the problem with weekly updates, I forget stuff. Anyway I did (at some point) bake a rather delicious, sticky, moist ginger cake. I’ve baked this bad boy a few times before, it’s easy but tastes oh so good.

Tuesday I got my first piece of badminton action with Ben at the sport centre down at Albert Park. Real nice setup here with a pool (+ flumes), basketball courts, badminton and even table tennis. Was good to get back into smashing the racquet about again on a Tuesday. Had a flying visit to the Great Northern, literally inhaling a steak with some beers, before heading Northwards to the Eagles Nest Theatre where the monthly homebrew club meet was being held. Sitting on various improv chairs (one being a wheelchair) surrounded by theatre props we ate garlic bread, drank lots of free beer and elected positions for the club, it was a great night.

The next day I just chilled (I think) and did a lot of job hunting online.

Thursday I cycled down to Williamstown and ate fish and chips after popping past the homebrew store for some advice and yeast. Later I went past Nat’s folks house and had coffee, cake and a chat with Alex before stealing some old homebrew kit they had under the stairs. I’ve promised them ginger cake which I’ve made today.

Friday I re-pitched the yeast into a new fermenter to get my beer going again (fingers crossed). In the evening I made one of my favourite dishes, mince & tatties with dough balls. Oh yes! I received some stick for calling potatoes ‘tatties’.

Yesterday went for a wee cycle Eastwards along the Merri Creek and a few other trails. Checked out the stalls at Rose Street Market in Fitzroy which is a predominantly arty hipster area of Melbourne, so this market sells all things art and design. There was some cool stuff including lots of custom Lego kit where I seen the Simpsons characters for the first time. Nat and Co are setting up a stall here next weekend. For lunch I bought myself a mahoosive donut called The Bear Claw and it’s packed with strudel filling, oh me it was good. I soon started to rain so I headed home, soaked. In the evening I walked over to Nat’s hoose where we watched The Bombers hump Footscray’s Bulldogs. 😀 Then we had another awesome (but tame) Skype chat with Garcia and Jefner, as ever a real treat catching up with them lot. 🙂

The weather this week is looking crap, confirmed by yesterdays downpour and today’s. Braved the shops for supplement ingredients for lentil soup and another ginger cake. Got some work tomorrow so need to be up early doors. Currently I’m defrosting my Nutella ice cream in the oven and away to watch a film.

Oh here are some photo’s from previous stuff:
