steak

Snow, in Oz. Plus a brewery visit.

At the start of the week I bottled my latest home brew, a clone of Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale. In about two weeks time it should be ready to drink and judged by the home brew club again. I got a good few bottles this time thanks to it not pissing all over the floor… I also made burgers.

Tuesday I cycled down the creek and along to the Palace hotel pub in South Melbourne to use one of my vouchers, buy one pint get another free. I ended up getting a free pot too as the tap had run out, bonus. I wasn’t down here just for the pub though (honest) but for tight arse Tuesday at Crown cinema (where I also got free popcorn, which would have been good if it wasn’t for the crappy salty sh*te you get here). I watched Tom Cruise’s latest sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow where he constantly dies, over and over again. Aliens, guns, robot suits, explosions and lots of CGI meant it was never going to be an epic in my book but feeling merry thanks to the beers it was enjoyable enough to watch. After that it was the pub again but up at the Great Northern. Met my Irish recruitment agent John and Sam here for a chat, steaks and beer.

BEER

BEER

Next day I had to go out to Clayton and literally turn something off then back on again. Living the IT Crowd stereotype there. Nat’s dad Alex was looking to get some RAM for Robyn’s laptop so I roped him into giving me a lift then we’d pop past a computer shop. We also had lunch at St Kilda beach which was really nice along with the weather, 18C that day!

Up early on Thursday for a 3 hour road trip with Nat and Alana to Mt Buller. I was quite excited about this as I’d get to hike up a big ass mountain covered in snow! 😀 The girls would be boarding but I hiked to save some pennies. The trip there was fecking foggy but thankfully once we arrived at the mountain it cleared into beautiful sunny skies. I’ve got to be honest here but before coming to Oz I assumed snow was very much a foreign thing so it was a bit of a shocker considering how much bloody snow there was on this hill. I got a map at the tourist office and headed to the summit. I appeared to be the only edjit walking about, it did feel strange navigating the slopes in the wrong direction with skiers & boarders whizzing past me. There wasn’t much indication of a path so I navigated to the summit the best I could. It was pretty sketchy at the top as it was a very narrow path up with death looming on either side, the views up here were completely worth it though. I couldn’t believe it when a skier sauntered up the path and told me he was going down from here. Nutter. After the summit I met the girls at the pub then went wandering again whilst they threw themselves down the hill. It was a bloody great day that, the hills reminded me a wee bit of home. 🙂

On Friday I went down to Nat’s house and helped with weeding silicon prints for a whole bunch of tee’s she’s selling for Rose St market that weekend. One print of Flinders St (a very cool print so it is) took me at least an hour to do. WTF. Afterwards I met up with Robyn, Kath and Alana for round 2 of Ethiopian food, this time in Moonee Ponds. Food was probably better here than the restaurant in Footscray, we still ate with our hands and I left feeling like a pregnant whale.

Weeding like a pro

Weeding like a pro

Saturday morning I cycled down to Rose St market to see how the stall was doing whilst chilling out before meeting Luke (home brew mate) at Moon Dog Brewery. It’s located in Abbotsford literally in the lions den of Carlton United Breweries, they make Carlton Draught (think Tennents) and export Fosters, nuff said. Housed in a small warehouse with a few sofa’s sprawled about the place and a few long tables, the second hand dairy equipment brewery is in the back behind the bar. Me and Luke went on the brewery tour which is fairly short and sweet much like the brewery, Mattias (one of the brewers) showed me the bottling line and some of the chiraz barrels they have. Anyway, we had a good few drinks here then I left to hangout with Rose and Jezza at her house.

I got a message from Nat the next morning that I’d made her business partner (Rose) turn up late to the market and she’d setup the stall herself. Oops! I wasn’t feeling too fly myself so got my bake on and made a peach & almond tart. Brought it down to Nat’s folks house where it got a big thumbs up. Nat popped by and we all stuffed our faces at a local Chinese restaurant. The Bombers also won their game yesterday against Port Adelaide so pretty good Sunday all in all.

Adventure Camping Times!

At the start of last week I got told that my days on the work-site would be reduced, slow production of the kitchens at the factory meant my workload fell. Not what I wanted to hear but thankfully my IT work was still ongoing.

Tight arse Tuesday I wandered over to the Northcote cinema and watched ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘. I really enjoy Wes Anderson’s stuff, his style is so recognisable and showcases many talented actors. This film is definitely more adult themed than the others he has done, a bit of sexy there and violence here, but also still bloody funny. Dan gives this film a Thumbs Up. Afterwards I met up with Sam at the usual, to eat the usual and have a few jugs of the usual.

We drank a fair selection of beers that night, enough to give me a bit of a mind blank… Did I pay before leaving?! My bank card and ID in my wallet would assure me that I did. On that Wednesday I headed out to Clayton and worked 9-6pm without a single blooming break. On the way home a nasty drunk was terrorising the tram I was on but a few stops later was wrestled off by about 5 cops. A few beers were needed that night, Punk IPA tinnies sorted me out.

Talking about beer (is he joking?) Thursday morning I cycled down to my local homebrew store to pick-up some grains and hops, today I would be brewing a ‘Dark Island’ clone. Well at least it should be roughly the same, as long as it’s dark and tastes fecking scrummy I’ll be a happy chappy. I brewed the same day and was being mucked around by my boiler, it was cutting out and just being a general pain in the ass. Reluctantly I was forced to become an electrician for about 5 minutes as I tore out a fuse, bypassed it then turned on the boiler again praising Jebus I wouldn’t be zapped. It all worked out fine though and the boiler kicked back into life. 3rd brew here, I’m feeling optimistic about this one… 🙂

Friday was an early start being back on-site with the boys. I’d brought my backpack with me as the plan that weekend was to go camping. I wasn’t sure where but I’d received a text from Rose just a day or two before about it, saying that Nat and some others would be going. I just said Yes. After work I got the train into the city, briefly looked about for a sleeping bag but gave up then headed to Rose’s hoose, the meet up point. Not too long after arriving Fayez and his girlfriend Annie turned up then Jeremy (Jezza). The plan of camping that night all ready crumbling at my feet with Nat pulling out, Jezza too then Rose. Fayez and Annie were determined to go that night so they did. The remaining three ended up drinking and visiting Nat & Kath’s house but we were all in agreement that an early start was needed to rejoin our comrades.

Surprisingly we were up before 8am the next day, feeling slightly zombie-like with less of a hunger for brains but more water and an egg & bacon roll. It took a few hours for us to get sorted, buy extra food, wait for Jezza to get up and finally hit the road. The journey there shouldn’t actually take that long (90mins) but we managed to double the time needed, to be fair though we were in no rush and it was a lovely drive. I also got to see Roo’s in the wild for the first time! 😀 The camping spot was located at O’Briens Crossing in Lerderderg Forest (think of Team America when you say that name) which is part of the Wombat State Forest. Once we entered the forest it was still a good few km’s of dirt road to the site which, thankfully, wasn’t a proper camp-site but a lovely spot right next to the creek. Fayez and Annie were here from the night before so the spot was sorted all we needed to do was setup the tarp and our tent. Fire on the go and beers cracked open, ahhhh this is what it’s all about, get away from the city, this is what I want to do more of. Nat turned up about an hour after us then the night really kicked off with tunes, toasted marshmallows, booze, chat, baked tatties and other stuff I can’t remember.

Fairly pimpin' setup right there

Fairly pimpin’ setup right there

The next day was tough for everyone, especially Jezza who attempted to pitch his tent on the other side of the creek whilst having polished off a bottle of Laphroaig whisky. He was the last to wake. At least we had proper coffee (in the cafetiere’s) and I cooked up a bunch of sausages. The Sunday would be a very relaxed and subdued one, weather was great and there was no need to do anything. I did attempt to chop up a felled tree with no major success, Woodsman Dan I’m clearly not (I think it’s because I didn’t have a lumberjack shirt on). Dinner that night was fantastic, Fayez and Annie cooked up a storm with spicy beef bolognese and pasta followed by baked peanut butter chocolate banana’s. Oh NOM. I love camp-fire cooking it just feels so much more rewarding. We worked through the last of our booze and had a very civilised last night in the woods.

Thanks to the Queen being born a while back Monday was a public holiday for all. I was awoken by a Kookaburra screaming out his monkey noises just a few metres from the tent. First up so I got the fire going in preparation for morning coffee and food. It’s a great feeling waking up in the wilderness. Once everyone else was up and the fire set in it’s ways I got breakfast under way, with Rose chopping up the rest of the veg it was chucked in a pan with about 10 eggs then left to bubble away. The group agreed it was rather tasty. The camp was then packed up with a high degree of efficiency and we stopped off at the pub, The Pig and Whistle, just outside the entrance to the forest for a pint. As soon as we’d left the Wombat State Forest Jezza had the car stopped and backed up. Road kill, just like home, is fairly common here but instead of rabbits and the odd deer it’s wombat’s and roo’s. Tagged by a ranger and lying next to the road was a female wombat and her child resting on top of her. First time I’ve seen these animals in the wild, very grim circumstances. After the pub we headed back to Melbourne and into another pub, Town Hall, in North Melbourne. I destroyed a cheese and bacon smothered parma, Jebus was a stuffed after that. Got a lift home, chucked clothes in the wash (I hadn’t changed for 3 days), chucked myself in for a wash then KO’d once my head hit the pillow.

I bloody loved this weekend, one of the best times I’ve had in Oz so far. 😀

My AFL cherry has been popped

Monday was an RDO (Rostered Day Off) at work which was bloody handy as I wasn’t feeling great after the beer festival. Don’t think I did much except bake brownies and cook a massive tuna pasta bake.

A tower of brownies

A tower of brownies

Tuesday was back to work as usual, the boys loved my brownies so they didn’t last long this week. Met up with Sam at the pub for the usual steak and beers, ended up staying until just before closing time, not the best on a school night…

Wednesday was ace fun, after work I met up with my homebrew club at Temple Brewing. Been wanting to go here since knowing about it and to top it off they had opened just for us. We carried out a very well organised blind beer tasting of 11 members homebrew, this should have been 12 but my addition didn’t work out, again. Great selection of beers paired with a fun experience of not knowing what the style was, who made it, how, what was in it, etc. We each wrote down our own notes of the beers then the scores were tallied to find the best, the notes were then handed to the brewers so they could see how they faired. Real fun so it was.

Sampling beer is serious business

After work on Thursday I met up with Nat and we went to the cinema to watch the latest X-Men film. Not only did we treat ourselves with ice cream but also the Directors Suite screen, essentially it has about 20 seats (recliner seats I may add) and you can order food to your table. It was pretty cool and so was the film.

Every Friday the work site closes at 3.30pm which is ace if you’re not then zipping off to Clayton to do more work. Sam joined me and we finished up at the back of 9pm then had a few brewski’s back at  the house.

On Saturday I helped Rose out at the book market in Federation Square, she runs a stall here each weekend and needed someone to man it for a bit and pack up. It was good fun and helped even more that it’s right next to Beer DeLuxe so naturally we had a few beer tasting paddles. 🙂 After the market I met Nick, Dave and co for a few beers then we went off to the MCG and watched Essendon vs. Richmond. This was my first live AFL match. 🙂 The stadium is massive, you can drink beer and the Bombers won. Overall it was a great experience which needs to be repeated. After the match there were more beers and we met up with the girls as it was Mon’s birthday drinks, needless to say we all got fairly ‘blind’.

Today I woke up at 1pm. Wasn’t feeling the best but nothing a coffee and litre of orange juice couldn’t sort out. I spent today baking blueberry cake with lemon curd and coconut topping along with a big ol’ cottage pie with sweet tattie mash. 😀

A day at the Proms

I was supposed to be starting my labouring job on Monday but due to problems at the site this was delayed by a week, not the best when I’m skint. Thankfully though I got some extra work with my current IT jobbie to top up my pennies.

So instead of doing some slave labouring I chilled before heading out for a walk along the Moonee Ponds Creek, exploring parts I’d never seen before, like hidden graffiti and a farm. It’s great having access to these creeks, completely disconnects you from the city.

Tuesday I cycled up to Tullamarine in the morning to fill in forms for my new job then cycled back down to Flinders St where I caught a train to Clayton. Spent a good few hours spinning some IT wizardry then on my way home popped into my local for the usual steak and pint (even though I was on my tod).

Something about this name just doesn't sound appealing

Something about this name just doesn’t sound appealing

Wednesday I chilled and decided to do something with the mountain of marshmallows I’d made at the weekend. This ‘something’ ended up being chocolate marshmallow flapjacks, a bit odd and no pictures unfortunately but they were rather yummy.

Thursday I cleared out the garden then went on a long walk to Carwyn Cellars, a nifty bottleshop in Thornbury that’s adding a new bar to its establishment, and I didn’t even buy anything! Had a Good Samaritan moment when I moved two felled tree’s from the creek path, a few cyclists stopped to help me. Hero.

Friday was my Nana’s birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANA! 😀 x

In the morning I cycled down to Rose Street and helped Nat fit a tree in her car (turns out I wasn’t really needed). On the way home I nipped past Woolies for road trip supplies as we’d be driving down to Phillip Island later that evening. Sammichies made Nat came round and we set off for Adventure Times. 🙂

The island is about 2 hours drive away, this is including traffic (uggghhh traffic), and the plan was to see the penguins strutting their stuff. Now I thought this was an early morning thing and Nat thought late in the evening, turns out we were both wrong as it was sunset, so we missed it. Bugger. Should’ve probably confirmed that but never-mind there is always next time. It’s a tiny island with the small town of Cowes in the North, where I ate a sub par fish & chips, but it is home to Australia’s MotoGP Circuit. Next to the bridge which connects the island was our hostel which felt a bit void of things to do, this didn’t matter though as it was only being used for a place to kip and anyway the Bombers were playing on the TV (a terrible match I may add). The hostel itself was quite nice, seemed clean, modern, big kitchens, TV rooms, fairly decent (but small) beds and an OK shower. It was also dead with about 10 people staying there. I watched most of Unbreakable before bed. An early start the next day for the trip to Wilsons Proms National Park.

I love getting out early in the morning when it means Adventures. 🙂 The roads are dead and we can actually see our surroundings. The park is an hour and a half away, the drive is good then hits great when you enter the park. It’s almost an island with the sea surrounding most of it, this is the most Southerly area of mainland Australia don’t you know? Still didn’t see any Roo’s on this trip just a few Wallabies. Stopped off at Tidal River, the main car park complete with loo’s, shop, cafe, campsite and fresh drinking water. Camelbak filled we then parked the car at Telegraph Saddle, the last carpark for all the Southern walks. Today we were walking up Mount Oberon, not the highest peak here stretching in at 558m and a simple 7km return trip. The walk follows a maintenance track all the way up to the telecommunications towers situated at the top, the wind going through these boys was making some noise. Views from the summit were pretty sweet, bloody windy up there though. On the return journey we took a peek at Squeaky Beach with it’s fine white sand, rust coloured huge boulders and crystal blue surf. Very nice. Definitely coming back to this park for a longer stay to tackle some of the more demanding walks, bloody ace place.

A 3 hour drive home and it was chill time. This weekend I’ve continued my Oz Film Festival by watching Mad Max I + II, with III to follow.

Today I was up earlyish for another day of IT work. An extension to the project needs completed ASAP as two engineers are visiting next week to complete the job. Got a lift part the way home from Ben then walked from Carlton via the shops for flapjack ingredients and a $2.49 pizza. I’ve made the flapjacks but they are cooling.

Early start tomorrow (0530) for my first day of labouring. I guess I should start practising my wolf whistles and inappropriate comments for women…

Baking cakes, cycling places and eating a bear’s claw

I think on Monday I baked. See this is the problem with weekly updates, I forget stuff. Anyway I did (at some point) bake a rather delicious, sticky, moist ginger cake. I’ve baked this bad boy a few times before, it’s easy but tastes oh so good.

Tuesday I got my first piece of badminton action with Ben at the sport centre down at Albert Park. Real nice setup here with a pool (+ flumes), basketball courts, badminton and even table tennis. Was good to get back into smashing the racquet about again on a Tuesday. Had a flying visit to the Great Northern, literally inhaling a steak with some beers, before heading Northwards to the Eagles Nest Theatre where the monthly homebrew club meet was being held. Sitting on various improv chairs (one being a wheelchair) surrounded by theatre props we ate garlic bread, drank lots of free beer and elected positions for the club, it was a great night.

The next day I just chilled (I think) and did a lot of job hunting online.

Thursday I cycled down to Williamstown and ate fish and chips after popping past the homebrew store for some advice and yeast. Later I went past Nat’s folks house and had coffee, cake and a chat with Alex before stealing some old homebrew kit they had under the stairs. I’ve promised them ginger cake which I’ve made today.

Friday I re-pitched the yeast into a new fermenter to get my beer going again (fingers crossed). In the evening I made one of my favourite dishes, mince & tatties with dough balls. Oh yes! I received some stick for calling potatoes ‘tatties’.

Yesterday went for a wee cycle Eastwards along the Merri Creek and a few other trails. Checked out the stalls at Rose Street Market in Fitzroy which is a predominantly arty hipster area of Melbourne, so this market sells all things art and design. There was some cool stuff including lots of custom Lego kit where I seen the Simpsons characters for the first time. Nat and Co are setting up a stall here next weekend. For lunch I bought myself a mahoosive donut called The Bear Claw and it’s packed with strudel filling, oh me it was good. I soon started to rain so I headed home, soaked. In the evening I walked over to Nat’s hoose where we watched The Bombers hump Footscray’s Bulldogs. 😀 Then we had another awesome (but tame) Skype chat with Garcia and Jefner, as ever a real treat catching up with them lot. 🙂

The weather this week is looking crap, confirmed by yesterdays downpour and today’s. Braved the shops for supplement ingredients for lentil soup and another ginger cake. Got some work tomorrow so need to be up early doors. Currently I’m defrosting my Nutella ice cream in the oven and away to watch a film.

Oh here are some photo’s from previous stuff:

Easter weekend, ANZAC day and the AFL

Monday was the last day of the Easter holiday weekend. Can’t really remember what I did during the day (possibly nothing) but in the afternoon I went over to Nat’s with my weekend bought beers. Rose and Kath were there and we stayed up later than we should’ve considering it was a school night…

I’d crashed on the sofa and was up early (a’body was working) then got soaked cycling home as it was pissing it down. It didn’t help that I detoured past the shops to buy ingredients for Nutella ice cream, which I made later that day, worth it. I got soaked again in the evening when I walked to the Great Northern thinking the weather was improving, at least there was beer, cheap steaks, good company and Chinese checkers at the end of it.

Hmm Wednesday don’t think I did much apart from bake banana bread and make my mate Paul’s chilli recipe.

Beer and Chilli. Winner.

Beer and Chilli. Winner.

Thursday I went for a wee cycle and got fed free lunch from my recruitment dude John, we discussed more work opportunities and future farm work. He’s Irish so him and his girlfriend have done the same visa I have and know what’s what. On my way home I nipped past the Great Northern for a cheeky pint. 🙂

ANZAC day was on Friday, another holiday but in remembrance of all soldiers lost in the many wars fought by both Australian and New Zealand troops. It’s also a big day for the AFL as two of it’s biggest teams (Collingwood + Essendon) play each other at the MCG stadium. I’ve recently pledged my allegiance to The Bombers (Essendon) so we went to the pub only to watch them get beat. Doh! Still it was a good match to watch. A bunch of us went back to Nat’s, lit a fire then got drunk.

Saturday I was hungover and did sweet F A.

Yesterday I went for a real good cycle clocking in over 50km, going up Moonee Ponds Creek then along and down the furthest up I’ve been of the Maribyrnong river to Footscray where I had a few beers with Nat and Co. before heading back home.

Brewing beer, baking cakes, cycling places and eating food

On Monday I stayed in most of the day to brew my next beer (American Amber Ale) and also make hot cross buns (which got burnt buns thanks to the tray or oven, ffs).

Tuesday I went for a cycle and walk about Yarraville, also watched the new Captain America film (meh) at the Sun Theatre, which is an old art deco piece of cool with low but comfy ass seats. Afterwards I headed over to the Great Northern for some steak, a few jugs of beer and catch up with Sam and Ben.

Very cool Sun Theatre

Wednesday was a massive walk to Fitzroy Gardens (popping past the Melbourne Museum and a few other awesome buildings) a good sized park near the CBD with a few old cottages and a conservatory that looks like it was in Bioshock. Then I wandered into the CBD in search of food and destroyed some dumplings and noodles in a Chinese restaurant (ordering in Chinese gaining some brownie points). The wake home was a bloated one.

I’ve been watching lots of Parks and Recreation, great show so it is, thought I’d put that in there.

Ben came by on Thursday and we had a good cycle down to Williamstown, ate fish & chips then got up close with two ships from the Sea Shepherd fleet (half their fleet actually). Popped past Dan Murphy’s on the way home then Nat came by and the night ended with an argument discussion on the Chinese language.

Friday was a veg day as it was start of the long Easter weekend when no one is working and everything is closed. Honestly it felt like Christmas Day.

Saturday I baked a carrot cake (NOM) and in the evening had a Skype chat with my Mum, Andy, Greg and even Sonnie. That was good. 🙂

CARROT CAKE

Sunday was a lovely day so I went for a cycle down to Richmond to visit the Purvis Beer shop. Oh what a shop. Not only is their selection fantastic but they stock Dark Island! 😀 This is one of my most favourite and cherished beers, so I was quite chuffed. After spending too much money on beer I cycled over to the Vic Market and scoffed some BBQ’d pork belly & salad (ha, salad) then some Dutch pancakes with ice cream and maple syrup. Ugghhhh. Cycled home (a bit uncomfortable after the food admittedly) and watched Romper Stomper then Ned Kelly (some good Australian education right there), drank some of my beer and had a great Skype chat with my Dad and Carol. 🙂

A loo with a view

This was the final week of my contract IT work, it’s been good and would be great if it could continue but the project has been completed, hopefully there is some more in the pipeline. Visited a few more pubs during the week (Great Northern is the regular now for Tuesdays) and went out on Friday night with the work crew. Had a wee pub crawl and ended up at the Evelyn hotel watching a few gigs before being denied drink at the bar… That hasn’t happened in a while.

The weather this week has been utter pish, literally non stop raining from Monday to Friday. Am I really in Australia?

Thankfully yesterday and today have been great so Saturday morning (a tad hungover) I walked to Yarraville’s homebrew store to pick up my grains. It was Kath’s (Nat’s sister) birthday weekend so in the evening a group of us met up at Beer Deluxe in Federation Square for a few beers (well I never) and a steak bomb sandwich. We also watched stand up comedian Reginald D Hunter at the Forum theatre across the road, great show and awesome theatre with its lighting making you feel it’s outside. After the show we went from pub to pub (one called the Atrium 35 floors up) and got drunk.

Today I woke up on Nat’s sofa (with Bailey and Boomer lying on top of me, they’re dogs) and after a few hours recovery we went past their folks house for a coffee and a yap. I was going to bake hot cross buns today but it can wait until tomorrow when I brew my next batch of beer (American Amber Ale).

Also had a great Skype chat with best mates Paul & Maritza this evening, really enjoyed that. 🙂

So long mutt face…

Visited a few pubs this week after work with some workmates, $12/13 steaks went down a treat. Also had my homebrew club meetup at the Great Northern (ace pub) and I walked away with some free hops and a loaf of bread.

Out again on Friday, Scott (our team lead) is back off to the good ol’ U S of A so we had to have a few drinks before his departure. Brent not long arrived from Texas to replace him and we get on great as he is a homebrew too (with a beard).

Speaking of homebrewing my beer seems to be deed (infected, gah!) so I’m going to try another one hopefully today if I can get to a homebrew store for some grains. I helped Nat yesterday (along with her next door neighbours kids, they love her) clear out the shed at her sisters house so she can use it for a studio. Seen my first huntsman here, the last thing he saw was a brick unfortunately.

The International Comedy Festival is on in Melbourne now and I shunned it a little (there is festivals here all the time) but apparently its big like Edinburgh Fringe, the entire month with loads of performers etc. Will need to check it out.

In other sad news I’ve been told that Maisie (one of our family greyhounds) was put down last week due to an on going illness, I’ll miss that mutt. 😦
